The Beginnings

It was 1975 when Dr. Juan Carlos Bagó started with a dream, and it was then that what today is Haras Firmamento, one of the most important Thoroughbred breeding centers in South America and recognized worldwide, began to take shape.

The first steps were short and not at all easy, only three proper names started the breeding adventure: Alumunita (Aleli), Peligal (Nyangal) and Miss Lula (Sculptor). They will be remembered for being the first mares to enter the stud, all of them were losers and were acquired in 1978 by Dr. Bagó in a public auction. Along with them came Delphos, a son of Right Of Way and Danae by Advocate, who also did not have too many parallels to transcend as a stallion. The field where he began to breed was not outstanding either, what today is the Cuida y Training center in City Bell, which at that time served as a stud farm. However, those names were the basis to start building high.

"We always have the idea of strengthening the team every day, it has to be very united, supportive; it is the only way" - Juan Carlos Bagó.

Everything changed in the 80’s when Mucura (Hot Dust), who over the years would become the founding mother mare, and Kaljerry (Jerry Honor), sire of Kalidoscopico (first G1 winner of the stud by winning the GP Santiago Luro in 1982) and Kaltrue (“Champion 2 year old” in 1985 and who gave the first G1 to Firmamento Stud by winning the GP Saturnino J. Unzué), joined the stud. In addition, in those years and by recommendation of Dr. César Valle, who also did such a work, the stud farm moved to Sierra de los Padres where it began leasing 180 hectares to Enrique González Alzaga, which had been Haras La Indiana at the time. Then Bagó was able to buy those plots and more, until it reached the 1400 hectares it has today. All of them are entirely destined to Purebred breeding.

Later came Fitzcarraldo (Cipayo), Numerous (Mr. Prospector), etc, etc. And thanks to their contributions, names such as Alpino Fitz, Rockin Fitz, Llers Fitz, Mr. Fitz, Mr. Fitz, and Mr. Fitz, Mr. Fitz and Mr. Fitz were born. Mat, Mr. Alleva, Miss Atorranta and the grand champion Miss Terrible, a world record for having won seven Group tests in a row in the same year (2002), a series that no other mare on the planet had ever achieved and only had one precedent, the British horse Rock of Gibraltar (Danehill).

From 2000 to date, the power of the cabin was overwhelming. In the last 24 years he has won 20 National Breeders Statistics and the last 14 consecutively. In addition, he was awarded 18 times as “Breeder of the Year” at the Carlos Pellegrini Awards.

If one had to choose a race that identifies Haras Firmamento, it would probably be the Gran Premio Copa de Plata. This competition has been won on six occasions by mares bred and defending the silks of the gull stud: Empeñosa Fitz (2002), Miss Loren (2003), Halo Ola (2004), Miss Taylor (2008), Kalath Wells (2009) and Miss Pinky (2012). All of them are or were part of the dam’s breeding stock, with the exception of Miss Loren, who won the Santa Maria Handicap (G1) with Firmamento’s jacket in 2005 in the United States, and was later sold abroad.

News

Sixties Song, winner of the GP Carlos Pellegrini (2016) and the GP Latinoamericano (2017) in Viña del Mar (Chile); The Great Day, winner of the GP Polla de Potrillos (2017) and GP Estrellas Classic (2018) and lately Emotion Orpen, who comes from winning the last edition of the GP Estrelllas Classic, are the best contemporary exponents bred in Firmamento’s meadows. To date there are 147 Group One Classics won by horses born in the Haras de Bagó.

Large investments, supported by a faithful and efficient work team, an excellent breeding stock of mother mares and clear ideas, make Haras Firmamento a successful operation that recalls a glorious past, enjoys a successful present and is enthusiastic about an encouraging future.
